In the GM case, the coolers are now HUGE and temps are very tightly controlled, incl an automatic warm up function at cold start (in addition to the user selectable elevated idle warmup sequence). So while thinner, the oil just doesn't get hot. My 22 GM dually hasn't been over 155F yet, even loaded.

Originally, I planned to get Mercon LV from Advance Auto parts, but they did not have any in stock, so I got Peak Full Synthetic Multi-vehicle (ATF) Automatic Transmission Fluid recommemded by them. It's said on the bottle that it is certified by Ford . The fluid isn't that expensive, the dealer said 6.50/quart and its at O'Reileys up the road. I remember reading somewhere that there were no additive packs in Mercon LV, and the specs seem awefully close. The fluid in the truck now is made by Global. Here is the spec sheet from their website: Mobil 1 LV ATF HP is compatible with Dexon HP, not Dexron VI. Dexron VI and Dexron HP (including Mobil 1 LV ATF HP) meet different GMW specs, meaning they're tangibly different and not interchangeable. Dexron VI = 6-speed FWD and 6-speed RWD transmission, as well as supersession for Dexron III.
